  Step 1: Connect to a TV?

  You don't have to connect to a TV, but then all contestants must huddle around the iPad to see the game board and read the questions as they are presented. So this instruction is for connecting to a TV. Skip it otherwise, as the rest of the directions are pretty much the same.

  If you are connecting to a TV using Apple's 30-pin to HDMI adapter, plug the cable in to both the iPad and the TV. On your TV select the appropriate HDMI input.

  If you are connecting to a TV using an AppleTV that is already set up set your TV to the input for your AppleTV. Double-tap the home button on your iPad and scroll to the left end of the multitasking bar, which reveals the AirPlay button (a hollow rectangle with a triangle on the bottom of the rectangle). Tap the AirPlay button to present the AirPlay picker, and tap the list item that corresponds to your Apple TV. Doing so should expand the list to include a line item "Mirroring" with an on/off toggle. You want that toggle to be in the "On" position.

  Once the connection is made, open Guess & Know on your iPad, if you haven't already. You should a short intro movie appear on the screen, followed by a notice that a game is about to start. These serve as confirmation that Guess & Know has noticed the addition of the TV screen into the game.

  Step 2: Gather players

  If you aren't already on the "Gather Players" screen, navigate to it.

  There are two ways contestants are made known to the game: You either add them yourself by tapping the plus button and typing in their name, or by the contestant requesting to join your game by using the Guess & Know Companion app on an iPhone or iPod touch. In both cases, their names appear in the listing on the right. Being listed there is just the first half of becoming a contestant in the game -- the second step is you, the host, tapping on their name in the list so that a checkmark appears out to the right edge. Starting with version 1.2 players who add into the game manually (tapping the + button and then entering their name) are automatically added into the game (you'll see the checkmark next to their name right away).

  While it may initially seem unnecessary to break this up into two steps, the reason we did so is that someone using the Companion app could come up with name for their team that you have objection to, and this separation allows you to confer with them over the name they have chosen, a name that will be visible to all players from time to time, and visible to a potentially large audience if the game is being played in public with a big screen TV.

  As you checkmark names, they will show up on the TV screen if you have connected one (see step 1).

  Step 3: Tailor sounds to the age of the audience

  By default the game plays pretty quietly, but for added fun you can tap either Younger Audience or Older Audience to best meet the expectations of the age group playing.

  Step 4: Begin play

  With all contestants showing a checkmark next to their names, tap the "Play" button in the upper right of the screen to start the game play.
